139 Friends
Ever since 1979, when an artists’ collective squatted the building at Warmoesstraat 139 to break away from the traditional art circuit, W139 has been a place where experimentation, urgency and imagination take the lead. In the ever-changing centre of Amsterdam, W139 remains a sanctuary where artists themselves determine the direction – a rare place in the city that we want to preserve and strengthen together.
After losing our structural subsidy in 2021, one thing became clear: in order to preserve this safe haven, we need more support both locally and nationally, as well as an independent financial basis that makes us less vulnerable. This is especially true in the current political climate, where it is uncertain whether we can continue to count on future support.
In order to offer artists unconditional freedom, W139 needs to be able to work more autonomously. Since 2025, we have once again received structural support from the Mondriaan Fund and the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts, but despite this, more space is needed to realise artists’ ideas – this has to do with both increased material costs and the application of the fair practice code.
In order to continue to make room for ideas that require time and experimentation, we are asking for support from our community. We are looking for 139 Friends who will support us with €139 per year. This will allow you to contribute directly to the core of what W139 artists want to offer: space to experiment and excel.

Who are we looking for?
We are looking for a group of 139 committed individuals from W139’s support base. These include young and established creators, cultural workers who have previously been involved with W139, and people of all ages and backgrounds who support the organisation – people from the living network behind W139.
How can I participate?
— We are seeking exactly 139 friends.
— As a Friend, you support us annually with €139 (or more).
— Your contribution will be automatically debited.
— As a 139 Friend, you will be invited to special occasions and events. This way, you not only support W139, but you also meet other supporters and help build your and our network.
— 139 Friends form a solid foundation. That is why the names of all supporters are displayed within the walls of W139 – as a permanent manifestation of our community.
