Visit Esraa’s Mind

Do you wonder what happens behind the scenes of producing a group exhibition? How did the artist’s ideas emerge from thought to canvas to beyond?

Visit Each Other’s Mind invites visitors to meet the artists of Outside the Soup. During these encounters, you will discover the work and inner thoughts of these makers, and the behind-the-scenes process of Outside the Soup. Sometimes in the form of a guided tour, other times with a short reading or artist discussion. In each of the six Visit Each Other’s Mind events, different works will be highlighted by various artists.

Esraa Elfeky (living and working in Cairo—she/her) is a multimedia artist working with video, sculpture, drawing, sound, and installation. Her work unearths the complex relationships that exist between the natural world, the body, time, and the urban environment. For the past five years, Elfeky has navigated themes such the apocalypse, decay, and resurrection as an ongoing exploration of her native country. The often overlooked landscape of the desert becomes a site for imagination, solitude, storytelling, and reflection on both historical and political events.

In the spirit of the collaborative nature of Outside the Soup, we invite you to become part of the soup. Visit Each Other’s Mind is a space for dialogue between makers and the audience, creating opportunities to weave together new meanings and affective dimensions surrounding the works.

Sightless Seeing #6: A Flower Noticed You

Presented as an alternative guided tour of the W139 exhibition, Sarah van Lamsweerde, alongside Leroy de Böck, a visually impaired actor, invites visitors to engage with the artworks and space through sensory rituals. Provoking contemplation, they ask: Were these objects endowed with agency and sensibility by their creators? Can the artworks gaze back at us?

Tracing Erased Memories

23, 24, 30, 31, October & 6, 7, 13, 14 November

Tracing Erased Memories is a site-specific multimedia guided walk, that aims to connect Amsterdam and Cairo through their harboured memories of resistance against state violence. Throughout the walk, participants experience the changing image of both Amsterdam and Cairo in relation to recent socio-political turning points. The walk is layered with testimonies from people who were directly involved in the 2011 Egyptian revolution and the students’ and squatters’ protests of 2015 in Amsterdam. This period forms a pivotal moment in the political climate of both cities, as waves of resistance rose against austerity measures and authoritative regimes. Through a choreographed roadmap, visitors walk through the city center in Amsterdam with headphones and a tablet. Whilst seeing Amsterdam ahead of them, the road of Cairo starts unfolding. Sounds of car honks in Cairo juxtapose with bicycles; a building in Amsterdam starts to dissolve into a burned down political party headquarters in Cairo. This experience of mixed up and intertwined realities echoes that of Moucharrafieh and Mohamed when they first moved to Amsterdam trying to make sense of this seemingly untroubled city. Through casual conversations with the guides, who bring in their own stories and perspectives, all these different layers connect towards a collective voice of resistance.

This interactive performance takes the form of a guided walk for one or two people at a time and will take place during scheduled time slots that visitors can sign up for.
