Oplage: 500 ISBN: 90-75387-01-6

  • Report of an Ongoing Journey

     10,00 inc. BTW
In April 2003 Warmoesstraat 139 was cleared out for a thorough renovation. W139 deliberately chose to be 'house-less' during the renovation period and not to seek a surrogate shelter. This choice was seen as an attempt to find out what exactly constitutes the essence of W139. For a year and a half W139 hopped from place to place. This 'scrapbook' documents the transitional situation, all the stages of the road that led from the Warmoesstraat to the Oosterdokskade. Title: W139 Amsterdam - Report of an Ongoing Journey Authors: Ann Demeester, Marleen van der Weerd, Roger Willems, Marijn Jostmeijer Publisher: W139 Year of publication: 2006 Pages: 304 Print run: 1250 ISBN: 109077459111/1397890774599119

Published with an eponymous exhibition in Amersfoort, the Netherlands, this catalogue provides an overview of works created there by immigrant Iraqi artist Sadik Kwaish Alfraji between 2016 and 2021, together with the oeuvre he produced in Iraq in the 1980s. Central to this cartography is a reflection on Baghdad, the artist’s own family history of migration, and his experiences in Iraq during the turbulent years he spent working there. His characteristic black linework and melancholic undertone is immediately noticeable, symbolic of the Baghdad of old, a cosmopolitan capital that is now a thing of the past. These are stories of migration and loss, but also of rising above hardship.

  • Screen printed t-shirt, designed by EMIRHAKIN*.

80% of the proceeds (€20 per order) will be transferred to Artists in Solidarity, who will then donate the funds to local grassroot organisations, initiatives and collectives in Turkey and Syria.

"@artistsinsolidarity_nl is a group of artists and cultural workers from Turkey who are based in the Netherlands. In response to the double earthquake that devastated large areas in Turkey and Syria, we created a solidarity group to collectively respond with greater impact than we could as individuals. Our aims are to raise awareness in the Netherlands, organize our international artist community both in the Netherlands and beyond to raise funds in solidarity and support, and establish a sustainable platform to maintain strong and trustworthy connections with local grassroots organizations, initiatives, and collectives in Turkey and Syria. Although we are not currently registered as a legal entity, we anticipate that Artists in Solidarity-Netherlands will grow into an international community of artists committed to raising awareness and support for moments of urgency, such as the catastrophic earthquake that occurred on February 6, 2023". For further information, please contact Artists in Solidarity at:  *The shirt was originally designed and made as a gift to the people who contributed in any way to the Dead Darlings fundraiser for W139 in 2021.
