SUMMARY:How To Set Your Signs On Fire
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday 2 April W139 will host a fundraiser initiated by Ukrainian artists to support the Ukrainian art scene. How To Set Your Signs on Fire is a mixed event with performances\, interviews\, DJ’s. Above all\, it is a call to action to support endangered Ukrainian art and artists through protest signs and donations. \n\n\n\nOn Wednesday 23 March a museum in Mariupol containing works of the 19th-century artist Arkhip Kuindzhi was demolished. Earlier on in the war\, a large collection of works by Ukrainian folk artist Maria Primachenko nearby Kyiv was destroyed\, and Donetsk Regional Drama Theatre was swept away\, killing hundreds of civilians who were inside seeking shelter. For Ukrainian artists Nikolay Karabinovych and Sophia Bulgakova\, who are the initiators for the Fundraiser in W139\, it is unbearable to witness what is happening in their home country and to see how culture is attacked. ‘Behind each artwork is the fate of a particular human being’\, Nikolay says. ‘Helping Ukrainian art to survive – is a necessary effort.’ \n\n\n\nAll proceeds of the fundraiser event will go to the Museum Crisis Center and the Ukrainian Emergency Art Fund. Besides music\, food\, and art\, there will be a live (online) interview with Olha Honchar in Lviv\, director of the Territory of Terror Museum about the position of art and artists in Ukraine. \n\n\n\nThe day will kick off at 13:00 hrs with a protest sign making workshop led by Ukrainian artists and activists Sophia Bulgakova\, Nikolay Karabinovych\, Christopher Pugmire and Valeriia Lukashenko. At 17:00 hrs this workshop hits the streets and the freshly made signs will be showcased at Dam Square in Amsterdam where the participants will raise their voice against the Russian war in Ukraine. The protest signs will be auctioned off later on. \n\n\n\nFrom 18:00 visitors can grab a plate of Ukrainian food and join a performative dinner prepared by Sophia Bulgakova & Cemre Deniz Kara at W139. A special edition of the talk show Stampa starts at 19:00 during which representatives from the Ukrainian art scene will be hosted and interviewed\, as well as the Dutch Prince Claus Fund\, which is currently working hard to preserve Ukrainian art and heritage. From 20:00 hrs onwards expect DJ’s and audiovisual performances by Ukrainian and Netherlands-based artists until midnight. All music and performances are curated by Sophia Bulgakova and FIBER Festival\, including (amongst others) performances by Loma Doom (DJ)\, Mark IJzerman\, and Sophia Bulgakova (Live A/V performance. \n\n\n\nHow To Set Your Signs On Fire is initiated by Sophia Bulgakova and Nikolay Karabinovych and supported by W139\, talk show Stampa\, Fiber Festival\, Lesley Moore\, Pictoright\, Open Studios and The One Minutes. \n\n\n\nDONATE NOW \n\n\n\n* All proceedings are gathered through the W139 bank account and transferred to the designated organisations and artists in Ukraine. \n\n\n\nProgramme 2 April: \n\n\n\nProtest sign making workshop How To Set Your Signs On Fire \n\n\n\n13:00-16:00 hrs\, W139\, Warmoesstraat 139\, Amsterdam \n\n\n\nA protest sign making workshop led by Ukrainian artists and activists Sophia Bulgakova\, Nikolay Karabinovych\, Christopher Pugmire & Valeriia Lukashenko. \n\n\n\nFree admission\, bring your own material. \n\n\n\nShowcase How To Set Your Signs On Fire \n\n\n\n17:00-18:00 hrs\, Dam Square Amsterdam \n\n\n\nShow your signs and raise your voice for the Ukrainian people. \n\n\n\nFundraiser How To Set Your Signs On Fire \n\n\n\n18:00-24:00 W139\, Warmoesstraat 139\, Amsterdam \n\n\n\n18:00-19:00 Performative dinner by Sophia Bulgakova & Cemre Deniz Kara. \n\n\n\n19:00-20:00 talkshow Stampa\, including interviews with museum director Olga Honchar\, Prince Claus Fund and others. \n\n\n\n20:00-00:00 Music & A/V performances by Loma Doom\, Mark Ijzerman\, Sophia Bulgakova\, Karabinovych and more. \n\n\n\nAdmission (donation) EUR 5 from 18:00 hrs onwards. SUMMARY:A Language Under My Skin
DESCRIPTION:“I am both a stranger and a native to the same land\, to the same mother tongue. This century told us too many times to stay alone\, to cut all ties\, never to look back\, to go and conquer the moon: and this is what I did. This is what I do.” – Etel Adnan \n\n\n\nWe are born into worlds\, environments\, and circumstances that are outside of our control—we are born into language. The language(s) we speak impact how we think about\, and interact with\, our environments. They influence our thought processes\, our feelings\, how we think about time and space. Questions surrounding language not only touch on linguistics\, but they have engaged philosophers\, lawyers\, religious scholars\, cognitive scientists\, anthropologists\, psychologists\, and many others. \n\n\n\nSo how are we shaped by language? Are languages merely tools for expressing our thoughts\, or do they actually shape them? In this solo exhibition\, Sadik Kwaish Alfraji explores the complexities inherent in these questions. Encompassed in the animations\, large scale drawings\, and murals that make up this exhibition\, are the questions of what makes a language. Is it the words themselves? Or the images of the words? Is it the alphabet or the sounds of the words or even the physical gestures of expression? Everything together is what shapes and forms a ‘language’. As a storyteller\, Alfraji is trying to bring forth one of the faces of language. \n\n\n\nA Language Under My Skin features all new work from Alfraji\, including an animated film\, graffiti murals\, and large-scale drawings that transform the exhibition space. Sadik’s drawings and animations echo the notions of the body as a language\, a manuscript\, a carrier of languages\, shapes\, meaning. The works in the show give form to\, and entangle\, the multiplicity of parts that shape language—from the alphabet books we use as children to link sounds with symbols to the complex metaphors and idioms that often resist translation. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition will also encompass a public program of workshops\, film screenings\, and talks that will expand on\, and provide new points of contact with\, the exhibition and its conceptual\, narrative\, and philosophical underpinnings. \n\n\n\nPhotography by Pieter Kers. \n\n\n\nCuratorial text (pdf)

SUMMARY:24h Centrum - Storytelling Sessions
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of 24h Centrum \n\n\n\nThe myths\, folklores\, narratives\, and stories that shape our societies\, and permeate through multiple generations\, are deeply entangled with language. Led by Sahand Sahebdivani\, founder of Mezrab\, and accompanied by Lara Ricote and Irina Koriazova\, this morning program will bring together storytellers to engage with the themes and questions put forth by Sadik Alfraji’s A Language Under My Skin. Himself a storyteller\, Alfraji’s work inspires us to explore how language shapes us and how each new language means a new shape\, a reconstruction\, a new understanding of the world. \n\n\n\nThe program will begin with coffee and a walk together through the exhibition\, followed by Sahand and a selection of storytellers from the Mezrab community sharing their stories with us. There will be room for dialogue\, conversations\, and the sharing of stories with one another. \n\n\n\nSahand Sahebdivani is the founder of the cultural center Mezrab\, which first began in his living room and has since found its home on the Veemkade (after wandering through many other locations). Today\, Mezrab is a developed cultural centre\, a storytelling school\, and hosts a wide range of storytelling\, music and other spoken word performances. For this special program we’ll be bringing the Mezrab to W139. \n\n\n\nPhotography by Elodie Vreeburg.

SUMMARY:The Names play: DH (Doug Hammond)
DESCRIPTION:As part of Sadik Kwaish Alfraji’s exhibition A Language Under My Skin\, W139 will host a performance by The Names. Shaped by the ideas of critical music\, listening and sounding practices\, and the position of the post-musical\, The Names combines playing musical material with reflections on public space\, society\, and the world of ideas at large. \n\n\n\nThe Piece DH (Doug Hammond)\, composed by The Names initiator Koen Nutters\, is an extended structure for modal improvisation based on the letters of the name of Doug Hammond: composer\, drummer\, musician\, poet\, and educator. The Names is a new Berlin/Amsterdam/Heerlen collective of creative musicians playing open\, yet melodic\, pieces in a Cage/Oliveros informed spectrum of improvised strategies and open-ended compositions. \n\n\n\nThe Names: \n\n\n\nHarry Golden – tuba \n\n\n\nMarielle Groven – violin \n\n\n\nAimée Theriot – cello \n\n\n\nKoen Nutters – bass\, composition \n\n\n\nGert-Jan Prins – percussion

SUMMARY:TAKE ‘EM DOWN Scattered Monuments & Queer Forgetting
DESCRIPTION:A book launch with love: a presentation\, a night of conversation\, performances and an abundance of presence\, hosted by Simon(e) van Saarloos and W139\, Amsterdam \n\n\n\nCocktails & books available! Admission is free. W139 is wheelchair accessible but does not have a wheelchair accessible toilet. For this event\, we have arranged that our guests can use the wheelchair accessible toilet at Hotel Krasnapolsky until 22:00 hrs. \n\n\n\nConversations with Margarita Osipian (curator\, writer) and Simon(e) van SaarloosMusic by Jörgen Gario Unom (Sites of Memory\, Poetry Circle Now) and Mira Thompson (singer & activist).Reflection by Manoj Kamps (queer conductor & theatre maker) \n\n\n\nAbout the book:Take ‘Em Down. Scattered Monuments and Queer Forgetting \n\n\n\nWho determines what is remembered and commemorated\, and why? Slavery happened long ago\, too long ago for apologies by the Dutch government\, according to prime minister Mark Rutte. Neuroscientists investigate how past events influence lives today and call it ‘intergenerational trauma’. How can we commemorate something that is both in the past and a daily reality? \n\n\n\nIn Take ‘Em Down\, Simon(e) van Saarloos is inspired by the historically invisibilized lives of LGBT people and queers. They demonstrate the power of forgetting and wonder if and how it’s possible to live without a past. At the same time\, Van Saarloos criticizes the way that a ‘white memory’ – including their own – treats some stories as self-evident while other histories are erased. \n\n\n\nTake ‘Em Down questions the normative architectures of commemoration: if a minute of silence signals respect during a vigil\, how do loud bodies perform proximity to the past? What if toppled statues become barriers for able-bodied folks\, disrupting capitalist rhythms? Take ‘Em Down is not about reconciliation through guilt but about living messy lives with pain and grief.

SUMMARY:Salwa Foundation — In Other Words
DESCRIPTION:A critical supplement to your Dutch language and culture courses. \n\n\n\nCulture is leaky. As people have been moving around the world for as long as we can remember\, we bring along traces and influences of other places. We borrow words from each other\, and they shift and morph as they travel. \n\n\n\nIn this edition of M.A.W. we will be looking at the cross-pollination and influences between Dutch and other languages and food cultures. Through language\, we can hear the traces of trade\, conquest\, of colonial history\, of migration.  Communities that have shared land for centuries – by force or by choice. \n\n\n\nDutch has been deeply shaped by Yiddish\, Arabic\, French\, German\, Indonesian. And it currently is also shifting through vibrant street language and musical influences. We will trace languages through borrowed words and through food culture. \n\n\n\nDrawing from the exhibition by Sadik Kwaish Alfraji\, we will be focusing on the relationship between Arabic and Dutch – tracing words such as ‘magazijn’\, ‘cijfer’ and ‘suiker’. We also will be exploring the way language can both be an instrument of power – naming and fixing people – as well as the slippage that happens when language is used against the grain. \n\n\n\nDuring three Monday evenings we will gather from 17.00-19.30 in the lovely space at W139 in Amsterdam. We will hear different perspectives from working in the cultural field\, have a sneak peek behind the scenes of cultural institutions and gain some critical tools to learn how to make a place for yourself in the Netherlands. We will practice Dutch vocabulary and make an alternative lexicon for the cultural field together. \n\n\n\nThis event will be hosted on the following dates:  \n\n\n\nMonday 30 May 17.00-19.30 – with guest speaker Margarita OsipanMonday 13 June 17.00-19.30 – with guest speaker Cengiz MengüçMonday 27 June 17.00-19.30 – with guest speaker Yusser Salih

SUMMARY:A Choir of Tongues II
DESCRIPTION:Through conversations about our personal experiences and using artistic resources\, we will develop and share our own tools for translation. \n\n\n\nLed by Sara Santana López and Maria Paris\, in Choir of Tongues II\, we get together to explore what is considered a mother tongue and how we can translate it. Texts brought by everyone in each of our mother tongues will become the center of the discussion. We will imagine and discuss our own translation tools by finding ways to share them. In which language can I express myself? What does it mean to understand? What is a shared language? These and other questions will guide us while we collaboratively experiment with translation. \n\n\n\nIf you’d like to participate\, you need to bring a small text in your mother tongue. It could be an extract from a book dear to you\, something you wrote\, a story someone told you\, or maybe a song from your childhood. A text the length of a paragraph or a short poem will be enough. \n\n\n\nThrough conversations about our personal experiences and using artistic resources\, we will develop and share our own tools for translation. In pairs\, we will use those tools to experiment and transmit our texts to one another. We will try to listen beyond language and read other than words\, translating into different ways of understanding. \n\n\n\nSara Santana López looks in her work for ways of participation in the political and power relations inscribed in cultural practice\, finding ambivalent strategies which implicate herself simultaneously as author\, mediator and part of the public. Conversation and encounter determine her process\, establishing a direct space of negotiation swinging between the intimate and the collective. \n\n\n\nMaria Paris’ practice translates silence across multiple media\, revealing the elasticity and permeability of language. Often through installations\, her work raises questions on how poetics can be a radical political tool. Concepts of absence and removal are entangled in various forms\, reflecting on the emotional and political nature of places and language. Currently\, her practice is focused on displacement and translation as material spaces for identity and poetics.

SUMMARY:The One Minutes - Everything happened so much: archive as poem in an age of perpetual witnessing
DESCRIPTION:“There are different ways to tell a story. I wanted to think about the way we bear ongoing witness to our own lives\, and how this material tells bigger stories about the material\, technological and socio-economic circumstances of the past and present. I wanted to give space to the unreliable narrator and the chaos of memory. To take seriously the political dimension of telling stories through the low fidelity\, poor images and unobjective close-ups that we are often left with in contrast to sovereign forms of cinema (newsreel\, advertisement\, video-essay). Building on these ideas\, in reconnaissance and reclamation\, here are 24 video-poems\, as true and accurate as any other form of storytelling\, or perhaps even more so.”– Jesse Darling\, April 2020 \n\n\n\nEverything happened so much is curated by Jesse Darling. SUMMARY:The One Minutes - Jr. Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:A new narrative for Ukraine: told by its children \n\n\n\nWhat is the influence of war on daily life in Ukraine? What is it like to grow up in a conflict zone? To live in constant fear? What dreams do young people hold for the future? \n\n\n\nIn 2016 and 2017\, The One Minutes Jr. went to Ukraine multiple times for workshops with young people in Avdiivka\, Bakhmut\, Dobropillia\, Kharkiv\, Liman\, Mariupol\, Militopol\, Severodonestk\, Sloviansk and Volnovakha to find answers to these questions. \n\n\n\nIn 2022\, with the war in the Ukraine\, these films are highly topical and at the request of International Short Film Festival Oberhausen\, one of the most important short film institutions anywhere in the world\, a compilation was made of 46 One Minutes. \n\n\n\nWatch The One Minutes Jr. Ukraine here. \n\n\n\nParticipating artists:Yekaterina MasalskayaAndrey GruzdevVadymSofia DevotchenkovaMarina PostolatiKatia TsapDenis LevchenkoDina NadelDenis and AdrejDasha StarikovaBibikova AnastasiaAnna KolesnykDanil PotapovKristina TolmachevaMikhail PerekhrestViktoriya ShchelkunovaOleksandrVolodymyrArtyrViacheslavAlexandra KulichenkoDaniil BuliBogdan YaliVeronika ShaposhnikovaAleksandr TsukorAlena SolyanikAlexander KurilenkoAnna LusenkovaMariya TseluhLilia MigutsaIvan KuraksinUlyana ChernikhRostyslavVadim ErgardVyacheslav PotskoNastya StarchenkoMaruschenko ValeriaDasha ShmulichIvan GorbYana MuntyanNikita NovgorodseDanilo SavkevichDaniil BuzevskyuValeria Gukezheva \n\n\n\nImages courtesy of the One Minutes foundation \n\n\n\nImage 2 – Strong family bond\, Sofia Devotchenkova\, 2017 (© the artist\, courtesy by The One Minutes Foundation)

SUMMARY:The Syntax of Smell
DESCRIPTION:Originally inspired by the urgencies of the pandemic and the anosmia that millions of people experienced\, The Syntax of Smell looks at the entanglements between scent memory\, nostalgia and toxicity. \n\n\n\nOur daily life has increasingly been scented by large conglomerates\, and many of our scent-based memories conceal histories of pollution\, waste\, and ecological extraction. Scents of fresh laundry and washed linen are likely the product of laboratory produced nitromusks; the taste of ‘fresh’ supermarket orange juice is usually a product of ethyl butyrate; and the burning of sandalwood incense\, a dear memory for many\, is both neurotoxic and linked to a few forms of cancer. \n\n\n\nEngaging with commercial artificial scent production on a micro scale\, The Syntax of Smell simultaneously utilises and critiques the olfactory toolbooks of these large industries. During specified moments when the work is activated in the context of an open lab\, visitors will be able to share their stories with Majorana\, who in turn will create a special scent for them that evokes their lost memories\, while simultaneously underlining the links between our memories\, our notion of ‘artificiality’\, and pollution. \n\n\n\nTimes of the performances: \n\n\n\nFriday 30 September from 18:00 to 21:00 at W139Thursday 6 October from 19:00 to 23:00 at W139Sunday 16 October from 13:00 to 16:00 at W139Sunday 23 October from 14:00 to 17:00 at W139 \n\n\n\nPhotography by Pieter Kers.

SUMMARY:Sonic Acts 2022
DESCRIPTION:W139\, along with two other venues\, Zone2Source and Het HEM\, is hosting the Sonic Acts Biennial exhibition one sun after another between Sept. 30 and Oct. 23\, 2022. Departing from the long-running Sonic Acts research on pollution\, the exhibition focuses on the inextricable links between pollution and time. Pollution is a process that usually manifests itself long after it has begun and often in indirect ways. \n\n\n\none sun after another touches on deep\, real and geological time\, embraces nonlinearity\, fluctuation and porosity\, and makes room for leaks. The image of the sun – as a sign of hope\, glowing without burning\, imbued with warmth – feeds the imagination and brings forth life. \n\n\n\nContemplating multiple incarnations of time\, one sun after another listens to an immersive aerial choir of bees\, follows a microbe embedded within lithium traveling from a Chilean mine to a digital device\, and plunges into deep time through lead-encased nuclear coconuts from the Bikini Atoll. Artistic research traces the lineages of exhaust produced by oil and other extractive economies\, while in other places it speculates over Greenland’s mineral deposits\, now made accessible by melting ice. In the Canadian Arctic\, visual narratives on monumental ice walls come and go with tidal movements\, soundtracked by a cacophony of environmental field recordings. Against the din\, visitors are welcome to a joyful meditation about presence\, sensing and bending time\, before drifting downstream\, where the exhibition stretches time even further. Diving under\, performative and installative artworks explore toxic cycles of water and stretch inner time with hybrid instruments and sub-aquatic amplification. \n\n\n\nTaking place throughout October 2022\, the Sonic Acts Biennial takes place across various locations\, interweaving exhibition openings\, performances and lectures. These are accompanied by in/outdoor sound installations\, artist presentations\, workshops\, excursions and other activities. \n\n\n\nSonic Acts Biennial 2022 is generously supported by Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie\, Amsterdam Fonds voor de Kunst\, Mondriaan Fonds\, Fonds 21\, Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds\, Fonds voor Podiumkunsten\, Paradiso\, W139\, Het HEM\, Likeminds\, OT301\, Zone2Source\, and Singelkerk. Co-supported by the European Union’s Erasmus+ program. \n\n\n\nPhotography by Elodie Vreeburg en George Knegtel.

SUMMARY:Opening Sonic Acts 2022
DESCRIPTION:On Friday 30 September we celebrate the launch of Sonic Acts Biennial 2022 – warmly inviting you to the opening of our exhibition one sun after another at W139\, Amsterdam. \n\n\n\nIn conversation with the works exhibited\, the evening includes interventions by researchers\, artists and performers\, each responding in turn to the porous and cumulative ways toxicity traverses across micro and macro experience. \n\n\n\nThe evening questions how encounters with extraction\, leakage and pollution might be rendered palpable — an interactive open lab by artist Cesar Majorana and tasting sessions by designer Leanne Wijnsma employing sensory experiences to illuminate environmental issues so often designated as invisible. The evening includes a collaborative performance by Loma Doom and G\, directly responding to\, and interweaving\, the myriad of sonic elements present in the exhibition space. \n\n\n\nPhotography by Pieter Kers.

SUMMARY:Extractive Archives: Conversation and Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Sonic Acts Biennial invites visitors to an evening conversation and book launch at W139\, celebrating the two Sonic Acts commissioned works OBIT and Hard Drives from Space — and the publication of Oil News 1989-2020\, a new artist book commissioned and released by Sonic Acts Press. \n\n\n\nDuring the evening\, Maryam Monalisa Gharavi and Sam Lavigne will be joined by Sonic Acts curators\, alongside artists Louis Braddock Clarke and Zuzanna Zgierska\, researcher Miyuki Daorana\, and the designer of Oil News\, Farah Fayyad. This event expands on two of the works specially commissioned for the one sun after another exhibition: Hard Drives from Space by Louis Braddock Clarke and Zuzanna Zgierska\, and OBIT by Maryam Monalisa Gharavi and Sam Lavigne. With their shared interests in hidden archives\, extraction\, and counternarratives\, this evening seeks to excavate the stories behind these two works — unearthing conversations on collaborative research methods and alternative modes of collection. \n\n\n\nImage: A decolonizing gesture performed by Olennguaq Kristensen (left) and Aleqatsiaq Peary (right) at the ‘Arnakitsoq’ meteorite crater. SUMMARY:Supercuts: Sabotage by Montage
DESCRIPTION:Led by artist Sam Lavigne\, attendees will use Python in conjunction with basic command line tools to explore the possibilities of manipulating video with code. \n\n\n\nAbout the Workshop:Emerging in the early 2000s\, the ‘Supercut’ is a genre of video editing made out of a montage of short clips with a common theme. The catch-all term\, initially coined by writer and net-culture commentator Andy Baio\, describes the fast-moving\, detail-obsessed videos that isolate a recurring pop-culture trope\, iconic idiom or idiosyncrasy. While often humorous\, pointing out ridiculous\, overused phrases\, the videos are also adept at cultural and even political commentary. Examples from the height of the genre’s popularity vary from a series of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s screams to Bill Gates saying ‘uh’ a lot\, to an experimental clip in which all of the words were removed from George W. Bush’s 2008 State of the Union address. \n\n\n\nThis workshop treats video as a textual as well as visual medium\, and focuses on repurposing found footage to generate new compositions and narratives. Together\, participants will interrogate the YouTube channels of corporate polluters like Shell oil and gas to create their own supercut videos. Through these methods\, the supercut becomes a subversive tool\, drawing critical attention to how large scale polluters justify\, excuse and obscure environmental harm. \n\n\n\nPhoto courtesy of artist.

SUMMARY:BUZZWA(O)L(R)K(D)
DESCRIPTION:Looking at loitering as both pollution and excess\, Angeliki Diakrousi invites you to join us in hidden and regulated public spaces at the centre of Amsterdam. \n\n\n\nAbout the workshop:Are you a local\, a teenager\, an active neighbour\, a digital citizen\, a skater\, a curious adult\, or do you just like to hang out at some square in your neighbourhood? This ‘buzzwalk’ invites you on a speculative walking tour through Amsterdam for audiating neighbourhoods and cities otherwise. What happens when the future of our cities is ‘smart’\, automated\, and mediated for reasons of safety and security? What is identified as noise and from whom? Who regulates noise and how does this affect access to public life? How might we trace the ‘unsound’\, in Steve Goodman’s terms\, the futures ‘not yet audible’ and ‘undefined’? \n\n\n\nLed by designer and researcher Angeliki Diakrousi\, this night walk playfully unfolds through ‘silent’ sounds and anecdotes from the city of Rotterdam – translated to the Amsterdam context – with the use of speakers and special sonic detectors including the Mosquito Harmonizer developed in collaboration with MAYB Studio (Mitchell Akiyama & Maria Yablonia). The materials gathered during this expanded time hanging out with others\, researching\, walking\, and encountering loitering teenagers and inhabitants\, will offer a starting point in considering Amsterdam’s borders\, frequencies and other possible resonances. \n\n\n\nBUZZWA(O)L(R)K(D) occurs on the occasion of the work Hunting Mosquitos which explores urban sound technologies and the socio-political implications of their use. The work started as an invitation from the curator Linnea Semmerling and TENT\, Rotterdam where it will be exhibited in December of 2022. The work\, supported by the Creative Industries Fund NL\, examines the ‘Mosquito alarm’ or ‘The Mosquito’\, a technology used in public places in Rotterdam that emits sound at a high frequency\, audible only to young people to deter them from loitering. It comes as a solution\, activated mostly during the night\, to issues of urban crime and security. Its use has triggered discussions about the extent to which this technology constitutes discrimination. \n\n\n\nParticipationThe walk will last approximately 2.5 hours\, is aimed for a group of maximum 12 participants\, and welcomes individuals regardless of experience. We ask participants to bring their own headphones and to wear comfortable shoes and clothes for walking outside. If the weather conditions are bad\, time spent outdoors will be minimised.

SUMMARY:Turning Towards Fluidity: Tournament of the Unknown
DESCRIPTION:From 19 November until 18 December 2022\, Gabriel Fontana’s Turning Towards Fluidity: A Tournament of the Unknown will take place at W139. Unfolding over a period of one month\, and running parallel to the World Cup\, A Tournament of the Unknown aims to overcome binary thinking and rigid social values\, through a series of games\, ceremonies\, workshops and classes. \n\n\n\nThe Tournament of the Unknown will serve as a framework through which we think\, act\, and engage amongst each other\, inviting us to re-imagine alternative modes of being together in society. \n\n\n\nDuring the opening and the closing\, the audience can actively participate in the tournament. Also\, various groups – ranging from local schools to art organisations – will be invited to participate in the organised games held at W139. In addition to the tournament\, an exhibition and public programme will take place in the W139 ‘arena’ so that the space is also activated in between games. We will be showing a selection of artworks and we will be organising a public program that includes lectures\, a film night\, and mediated world cup viewing sessions. \n\n\n\nThe exhibited artworks\, which include installations\, textiles\, and video works\, will intervene into the sports hall and provide new entry points into sports as a microcosm of society. Next to this we have curated a selection of clothing and accessories by independent designers and artists that engage with the intersection of sports and fashion. Merchandise\, specially designed for the exhibition\, will also be available at the W139 shop. \n\n\n\nParticipating artists are Ronnie Close\, Delphine Dénéréaz\, Gabriel Fontana\, Martynas Gailiušas\, Davy de Lepper\, John Lucas\, Claudia Rankine\, Julius Thissen\, Paul Whitty\, Versatile Forever and Sample.CM. \n\n\n\nHandout (pdf) \n\n\n\nPhotography by Zazie Stevens and Elodie Vreeburg. \n\n\n\nVisual identity by Sheona Turnbull and TAL. \n\n\n\nSupported by VriendenLoterij Fonds\, Creative Industries Fund NL\, Mondriaan Fonds\, City of Amsterdam and Concrete.

SUMMARY:The Platform Presents Iran vs USA
DESCRIPTION:Researcher Nathanja van den Heuvel and Gabriel Fontana held a conversation on Nov. 29 about their joint research on sports and queer pedagogies. This was followed by a live screening of the World Cup soccer match Iran vs USA. The Platform mediated and disrupted the screening via a live augmented visual overlay. The soccer commentary was replaced by a DJ set of two DJs playing against each other\, and back-to-back: Moody Mehran\, an Iranian DJ\, and Claire Clover from the U.S. The event was non-profit\, and 2 euros from each ticket went to the NL-based\, women-led Iranian organization Jina Collective. \n\n\n\nPhotography by Elodie Vreeburg.

SUMMARY:Power Plays: Film Screening Night
DESCRIPTION:Ronnie CloseMore out of Curiosity \n\n\n\n26:07 minutes\, single-screen\, 16:9\, HD Digital Video\, 2014. \n\n\n\nOne of the key players in the new emergent political debate are Egypt’s fanatical football supporters\, the Ultras. Although affiliated to different teams in the domestic league they often joined forces in street protests to remove Hosni Mubarak in January 2011. The controversy over the 2012 Port Said incident when 72 Al-Ahly fans were killed in an orchestrated attack forced the Ultras back onto the streets. They mounted a successful political protest campaign against the state forces that culminated a year later in legal conviction and a sense of retribution. \n\n\n\nMore Out of Curiosity is a film work drawing on documentary narratives to frame the capacity of resistance in current social movements. This film is constructed from video footage drawn from a number of sources\, including the Al-Ahly Ultras themselves who shared their video archive material. The assemblage of images of street protests\, football games\, riots and banner making helps stitch together a narrative to expose their unique local subculture in an overlapping meta-documentary format. The film work is bookended by the Port Said incident and the court verdict a year later. This structure is divided into seven scenes which define and categorize the video imagery. No voiceover resists the direct deciphering of the video material and the film operates on an instinctive\, visceral level driven by a charged soundtrack. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPia Lindman \n\n\n\nSports Arenas (series)\, 2000-2004   \n\n\n\nMany of Lindman’s video works focus on how the built environment relates to the social interaction it is designed to contain. In this series of video works—including Viewing Platform\, 2002; Shea Stars Flashes\, 2004; and Game-Time\, 2001—Lindman uses a video camera to record changes of light and movements in space and time within sports arenas and stadiums. The video works are filmed from a fixed camera position and the video footage is then made transparent and cut into one-minute segments. These segments are then layered on top of each other. During one minute the viewer sees the entire 60-minute video in real time\, however simultaneously as multiple layers. Among other spaces\, she has shot baseball stadiums and other sports arenas in New York\, contrasting the monumental structure of the stadiums to the fluctuating density of the audience. \n\n\n\nPresentation of this video work series is courtesy of the artist and New York MoMA. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFlorian van Zandwijk \n\n\n\nOur human and technological sensorial perceptions are inseparably connected and constantly shaping each other in today’s digital age; this fact usually serves as the basis for Van Zandwijk’s projects. With a simple intervention or through written or visual essays\, Van Zandwijk researches topics from his own perception and hypothesis about present human and non-human Ways of Seeing. In this way van Zandwijk tries to provide insight into and make a statement about contemporary themes involving the biases and limited capacities of human and technological perception. Such themes are; social media\, mass-surveillance and computer vision. \n\n\n\nThe Ball\, The Field\, The Arena \n\n\n\nIn his book Homo Ludens (1938) Dutch cultural theorist Johan Huizinga suggests that play is both a primary and a necessary condition for generating culture. The game of football—the biggest globalised manifestation of organised play—is taken in The Ball\, The Field\, The Arena as a metaphor for the inseparable relationship humans have with culture\, play\, and our own technological developments. By zooming out from the ball to the field into the arena\, the work shows that human culture is not only shaped via play but that our play is equally shaped by the technology we create—the two engaging in a mutual relationship with one another.

SUMMARY:Dead Skin Cash
DESCRIPTION:Voluntarily or involuntarily we humans shed our dead skin. In this exhibition\, Ghita Skali and Salim Bayri take this fact as their starting point to zoom in on the ambiguities within our relationship to dead skin—the tensions between its acceptance and rejection (some keep it\, some scrub it away)\, its proximity and our neglect\, our indifference and its unstoppable production\, our obsession and care but disgust once it leaves the body. \n\n\n\nOffering €20 per gram\, dead skin collection networks emerged through gossip\, online advertisements\, business cards\, and stickers distributed around the city repeating the slogan “get money for your dead skin”. A naive attempt to create a new kind of currency while simultaneously diverting and redistributing public money to people who took the bait out of curiosity\, necessity\, or entertainment. Within this context\, an intimate and immediate material such as skin becomes a possible commodity. How dirty can money be?   \n\n\n\nWhat happens when a value is set on something we expel from our bodies? When there is the possibility of getting a reward for something that is usually discarded\, dilemmas arise between economic interests\, integrity\, ethics\, labour\, and exploitation—echoing the metaphor of “selling your own skin”. Despite this enticing offer\, some people had no interest in this exchange\, provoking the question “who can afford not to sell their own skin?”.  \n\n\n\nThe exhibition is composed of all new works. A Dead Skin Cash information welcome desk gives way to large printed textiles that appear as aerial views of landscapes but which in fact are made of dead skin samples from contributors. Inside empty construction and spa buckets are recorded voices and sounds from the conversations of disgust and amusement with strangers\, confusion from nail salons\, and a dermatologist’s opinions. Upstairs\, a ‘classical’ exhibition room displays collages made with found images and collected material. Further in\, the video Semiotics of the Hammam—a direct response to Martha Rosler’s Semiotics of the Kitchen— shows a character trapped in a dry hammam presenting\, with irritation\, hygiene tools that gradually start to feel like weapons. \n\n\n\nPhotography by Pieter Kers. \n\n\n\nHandout (pdf) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nColophon\n\n\n\nInitiated by Salim Bayri and Ghita Skali. \n\n\n\nW139 team: Tomas Adolfs\, Nadia Benchagra\, Dana Claasen\, Levi van Gelder\, Dil Ghale\, Sam Geer van der Klugt\, Kirsty McIntosh\, Margarita Osipian\, Claudio Ritfeld\, Annette WolfsbergerSupport team: Andre Avelas\, Grimm van den Berg\, Hugo Inglez\, Alma Kim\, Boris van Nes\, Pedram Sazesh\, Sabrina Simons\, Sophie Soobramanien\, Shreya De Souza\, Angus Liao\, Zhix \n\n\n\nVisual Identity: Oriol CabarrocasSupported by Gemeente Amsterdam\, Mondriaan Fonds and Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds.

SUMMARY:Who can afford to not sell their own skin?
DESCRIPTION:Six artists are invited to react to the prompt “Who can afford to not sell their own skin?” by curating a playlist of visual and audio materials for this weekly screening program. The schedule and invited artists are the following: \n\n\n\nTuesday 31 January — Mariana Penas Charrua Tuesday 7 February — Sophie Soobramanien Tuesday 14 February — Jay TanTuesday 21 February — Nolwenn Vuillier Tuesday 28 February — G Tuesday 7 March — Henna Hyvärinen \n\n\n\nEvery Tuesday from 18:00-19:00 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMariana Charrua is a ______tourist\, artist_________ from Portugal.  \n\n\n\nHer work manifests in different forms – from paintings or objects to drawings or performances\, or some form in between all of those. Charrua adopts an attitude of equalizing things\, not taking them as sacred but giving them a symbolic charge.  \n\n\n\nThe result: nonsense images that point to daily situations and characters (animals) or basic life needs: food or love; provocations that raise questions\, not answers. A theatrical\, grotesque and humoristic tone that creates a narrative and deconstructs the idea of elegance.  \n\n\n\nThe image that presents this program is a collage between an internet image and a photo from her previous collaborative performance I AM A COLUMN\, a play where the performers act as columns\, stand for relationships dynamics and play with norms. \n\n\n\nInstagram: @___l0la_____ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSophie Soobramanien (b. 1995) is a British Mauritian artist living and working in Amsterdam. She is not sure what she is doing anymore. But she recently bought a 2023 year planner and this felt good.  \n\n\n\nInstagram: @ssooooobs \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJay Tan was born in London and moved to the Netherlands in 2008. They completed the MFA at the Piet Zwart Institute in 2010 and were a 2014/15 resident at the Rijksakademie. Based in Rotterdam\, they make sculptures and installations\, sometimes with video and sound\, or other moving parts\, often with a focus on domestic mechanics and decoration. They currently teach at the Masters of Artistic Research programme at KABK\, Den Haag and the Fine Arts Dept at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie\, Amsterdam.  \n\n\n\nThey have shown work at Tent\, Rotterdam; the CACC\, Paris; Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art\, Warsaw; Ellen de Bruijne Projects and Gallerie van Gelder\, Amsterdam; Futura\, Prague; Kunstverein\, Amsterdam; Vleeshal\, Middleburg; the CAC\, Vilnius; Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen\, Rotterdam; Hollybush Gardens\, London; Kunstinstituut Melly\, Rotterdam and RongWrong\, Amsterdam.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNolwenn Vuillier is a visual artist whose practice questions the nature-culture dichotomy and the standardized representations of our environment that come out of it. She often works outside or at the fringe of traditional exhibition spaces and seeks ways of engaging with audiences beyond art viewers. At the moment\, she is interested in speculative fabulations\, interspecies dialogues and drops in still life paintings.  \n\n\n\nInstagram: @nolwennvuillier \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLuton\, The Galaxy\, The Mall. She incorporates humor and her interest in the absurd to get closer to themes that otherwise might feel uncomfortable or eerie. Hyvärinen has been part of collectives and artist-run initiatives such as the music performance duo echo+seashell\, and artist-run space and collective Sorbus (2013-2020) in Helsinki. She graduated in 2014 with an MFA from the University of the Arts in Helsinki and was a participant at De Ateliers residency program in Amsterdam in 2017–2019\, where she co-founded Root Canal\, a nomadic artist initiative with fellow residents. \n\n\n\nInstagram: @hyvarinen.henna52

SUMMARY:A Reality Through Words and Images
DESCRIPTION:Taking place on March 8 at W139\, A Reality Through Words and Images is a group screening programme of experimental documentaries\, essay films\, and poetry by Iranian artists. The screening programme directly or indirectly introduces ideas about permeability and entropy\, political environment\, the female body\, displacement and ruination through excursions into family history. With video work by Mehraneh Atashi\, Amirali Ghasemi\, Mahoor Mirshakkak\, VidAmir\, and Gelare Khoshgozaran\, whose works embrace the radical aesthetics of documentary and contemporary art.  \n\n\n\nBelow you will find a list of featured artists’ and their work:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGulistan (Rose Garden) | 06:40 | by Mehraneh Atashi\, 2011 \n\n\n\nBased on a poem written by Saadi\, a 13th century Persian poet: “The night was spent at the garden with a friend; such a pleasant setting with tree branches meeting above\, as if pieces of crystal and the cluster of pleiades were hanging from its vines. In the morning\, when the thought of returning exceeded the desire to stay\, I saw my friend ready to leave for the city with a lapful of flowers\, basil\, and hyacinth. I said: “As you know\, flowers do not last and unfulfilled are the promises of the garden. Men of wisdom advise against attachment to that which is ephemeral.” “So\, what is to be done?” asked my friend. I replied: “For the pleasure of observers and the delight of those present\, I shall compose the gulistan (‘The flower garden’) whose pages the autumnal wind cannot rend and whose vernal bliss the passage of time cannot turn to the woes of winter.” \n\n\n\nMehraneh Atashi (b. Tehran\, Iran) Atashi holds a BFA in Photography from Tehran University of Art\, IR and completed the two-year residency at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam\, NL. Mehraneh’s work unfolds between the time of the self and the time of the world. Through an excavation of memories\, archiving and documentation of the self. Her works have been exhibited internationally. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSediment | 18:00 | by Vida Kashani and Amir Komelizadeh\, 2019 \n\n\n\n‘Sediment’ is a short docu-fiction film. In this film\, which takes place both in Iran and the Netherlands\, there is a focus on girls and women in two cultures—Iranian and Dutch—which provides the viewer another way to look at diversities. There is a sense of sameness\, rather than individuality\, that emerges\, despite their differing social and cultural environments. But at the same time\, the viewer is aware of their very real social\, economic and cultural divides. The film is a visualisation of gaps and struggles in the stories and the upbringing of women which causes social injustices in both cultures.  \n\n\n\nVida Kashani (b. Tehran\, Iran) and Amir Komelizadeh (b. Tehran\, Iran) have a collaborative artistic practice under the name ‘VidAmir’\, that moves from Iran outward to places such as the Netherlands\, where they have been living since 2011. VidAmir’s practice encompasses the practices of art\, filmmaking\, installation\, and is united conceptually by interests in poetry\, storytelling\, archive\, and politics which provoke new imaginaries that are equally bound to aesthetics. VidAmir centre collaboration in their practice; they have thus far completed several projects in intensive collaborations with musicians\, philosophers\, and citizens. Their work has been screened/exhibited internationally.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBeak of Lies | 06:05 | Amirali Ghasemi  and Mahoor Mirshakkak\, 2020 \n\n\n\n‘Beak of Lies’ is based on a poem of the same name by Amirali Ghasemi. It has been a while that he has been collecting his empty asthma inhalers\, which are used in the film to visualise the poem. Mahoor Mirshakkak recorded the audio and video of the piece as Amirali Ghasemie re-performed the part. ‘Burning Things’ is an archival installation/expanded cinema project. It was developed and executed in the quarantine period as a self-assigned residency program at New Media Projects.  \n\n\n\nThe gloomy and bizarre words emulate events surrounding us in 2020 besides the political climate that made it even worse. The calm atmosphere of the analog lab creates an immediate unbalance when the mechanical aspect of making Photograms (without paper) creates a passing moment: the words will only last a few seconds. Though it is enough for the performer to read them\, the words will inevitably disappear into the void.  \n\n\n\nAmirali Ghasemi (b. Tehran\, Iran) is a curator\, media artist and a graphic designer based between Tehran & Berlin. Tehran\, Iran)\, 2022 \n\n\n\nLocated at 3005 Massachusetts Ave N.W. Washington D.C.\, the former embassy of Iran in the US has been shuttered for four decades. The vacant and abandoned building embodies a contradiction: it is a ruin due to its deteriorating condition caused\, in large part\, by the ongoing US sanctions on Iran\, and it is privileged with an exceptional protection thanks to its ‘foreign mission’ status. Taking the building’s symbolic and material status as its departure point\, Royal Debris is a rumination on borders\, displacement and ruination through excursions into family history\, architecture\, poetry and contemporary arts. \n\n\n\nGelare Khoshgozaran (b. Tehran\, Iran) is an artist\, filmmaker and writer whose work engages with the legacies of imperial violence. She uses film and video to explore narratives of belonging outside of the geographies and temporalities that have both unsettled our sense of home\, and make our places of affinity uninhabitable. Gelare has exhibited internationally and is an editor at MARCH: a journal of art and strategy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe programme is curated by Vida Kashani\, an Iranian independent filmmaker\, writer\, multimedia visual artist\, and producer based between Amsterdam and Groningen. She holds a master’s degree in Arts and Design\, moving image direction\, from the Sandberg Institute. She is often inspired by her socio-political encounters\, hence is interested in telling untold stories\, focusing on issues such as gender\, being a woman\, and inhabitants of neo-liberal cities. She tells these stories through a poetic approach which stems from her Persian background.  \n\n\n\nThinking in the aftermath of Jina’s (woman\, life\, freedom) uprising\, Vida Kashani has curated an evening of screenings by Iranian artists in the hope of offering some insight into the situation in Iran through films and video art. The current Iranian protest is a reaction towards the death of Jina Mahsa Amini\, a young woman of Kurdish descent who died after being arrested by morality police for improper hijab. There have been demonstrations in more than 160 cities\, making it the largest wave of protests in years. This evening seeks to create solidarity with the struggles of incredibly courageous Iranian people fighting for equality\, freedom and human rights.  \n\n\n\nDuring the evening you can donate money\, which will go to non-governmental organisations based in Iran that allocate their funds to women’s rights activists organisations such as Mehrafarin organisation and Nedaye Mandegar.  \n\n\n\nIf you would like to attend this event please reserve a (free) ticket via Eventbrite\, this is so we know how many people to expect.
