DESCRIPTION:The Wild is a series of pop-up bookstores and art experiences inspired by the tradition of Black fugitivity\, initiated by Tracian Meikle and Marly Pierre-Louis. \n\n\n\nIn a zine-making workshop on November 14\, 2021\, facilitated by Marly Pierre-Louis and Kimberley Cosmilla\, 11 of us gathered and collaged material found in Black literature and personal archives\, creating roadmaps for liberation. All zines were riso printed. \n\n\n\nDuring the launch Kimberley and Marly will discuss the radical history of zine making and riso printing and what it means to produce and proliferate narratives outside of traditional publishing institutions. \n\n\n\nZines made by workshop participants have been assembled into one collection that will be on sale during the launch. \n\n\n\nPhotography by Jeroen de Smalen.

SUMMARY:Pizza's For the People
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of film and pizza!  \n\n\n\nWe will be screening Hwang Kim’s Pizzas for the People (2013) and the documentary video of the making of the film. Related to the video we will organise our own special pizza party.  \n\n\n\nNorth Korea is one of the most culturally isolated countries in the world. To protect the national identity from what is viewed as potentially corrupting outside influences\, the government tightly controls all media. However\, when recently deceased leader Kim Jong-il decided that the availability of pizza to the wealthy political elite was of national importance\, it led to the opening of the first ever North Korean pizzeria. In response\, artist Hwang Kim arranged for Chinese smugglers to smuggle an instructional DVD for making pizza into North Korea (since DVD players are widely found in North Korean homes)\, where it would be regarded as illegal propaganda. Pizzas for the People is a critical exploration of how design can playfully contribute and impact on a social and cultural level\, subtly challenging an ideological status quo. \n\n\n\nThe evening program includes a make-your-own pizza party and screenings of Hwang Kim’s Pizzas for the People and the documentary video about the making of the film.

SUMMARY:Real-Time History
DESCRIPTION:During the course of global conflicts\, visual material generated by trained and untrained video makers could potentially be the only documentation of recorded events. In contemporary times of post-truth and widespread manipulation of media narratives the related gatekeepers\, caretakers and interpreters of such documentation vaults become essential in establishing justice\, but also in generally memorialising important events for future generations. \n\n\n\nIn the aftermath of the Syrian conflict\, a number of European court cases have commenced in 2020 in which prosecutors invoked the principle of universal jurisdiction in international law to ​​prosecute pro-regime individuals now based in Europe who have committed crimes against humanity in Syria. These developments make it possible for video material to contribute to legal followup on war crimes\, even if not in a Syrian context. \n\n\n\nReal-time History is a series of video conversations that takes a look behind the scenes to explore perspectives of “makers”\, “distributors” “analysers”\, “archivists” and “legal interpreters” who question\, contribute and guard accurate and detailed interpretations of open source visual material. In tonight’s program we’ll be engaging in dialogue around the Real-time History project—an on-going research investigation which uses artistic methods of subjective\, image centred analysis to juxtapose and interpret video material connected to the Syrian conflict. \n\n\n\nThe program will start with a screening of the first iteration of Real-time History\, which was launched in September 2018 as a 22-minute video and focussed on video reportings of a particular supposed chemical weapon attack which took place in the city of Douma on the 7th of April 2018. Most of the key videos in question were found on the web platform Syrian Archive (www.syrianarchive.org)\, “a Syrian-led and initiated collective of human rights activists dedicated to curating visual documentation relating to human rights violations and other crimes”. Following the screening\, we’ll be joined by Foundland Collective (Lauren Alexander and Ghalia Elsrakbi) and Hanna Rullmann to engage in dialogue around the new and unfolding iterations of Real-time History—looking at how archives are collected; the power and values that emerge from the analysis of open source material; and the importance of opening up\, questioning\, and embracing the complexities of collective narratives. \n\n\n\nTrigger warning: This event includes sensitive video content that depicts acts of violence. \n\n\n\nReservation Required

DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday 13 November for a fruit-full workshop led by Veronika Babayan. The workshop involves watching\, listening\, remembering\, and using our hands together. There will be undulating\, non-linear storytelling and readings by Veronika as well as cutting\, cooking and drawing collectively. Participants will learn how fruit leather is made—also known in the Caucasus and Middle East as pastegh\, pestil\, lavashak\, tklapi\, amerdeen. Each person will be given their own small piece of pastegh (fruit leather) on which they can draw/write with edible ink. There is also the option to laser engrave symbols into your piece. Please read the file requirements below carefully.  \n\n\n\nIn Veronika Babayan’s installation Sour Counterfeits\, the maternal Armenian tradition of fruit leather making is seen as a mnemonic device for cultural preservation. DESCRIPTION:For many years\, artists have been exploring their identities by fictionalizing alternative characters. Through the alter ego\, or the alternative self\, one can speak about things that they aren’t often able to openly express. It becomes a way to deal with complex issues\, to speak out the unspoken\, and to explore the latent layers in one’s own self. \n\n\n\nIn That Those Beings Be Not Being\, various artists are applying and playing with the concept of the alter ego to delve into and communicate the elusive\, the obscure\, the transitional and metamorphic dimensions of the self. Met zijn eigen ervaring van de dienstplicht als uitgangspunt\, in relatie tot zijn queer identiteit\, maken deze installatie en performance de onderdrukkende structuren zichtbaar die hij moest ondergaan – ze tonen de sociale camouflage waaraan hij zich moest blootstellen. Het werk\, dat binnen deze opstelling een nieuwe vorm aanneemt\, zal worden gepresenteerd als een permanente installatie en wordt geactiveerd door een aantal terugkomende performances waarin EMIRHAKIN de institutionele en sociale grenzen die hem werden opgelegd\, reciteert\, opnieuw uitbeeldt en opnieuw tegenkomt. \n\n\n\nDeze performances\, die tijdens de tentoonstellingsperiode zeven keer zullen plaatsvinden\, zijn van essentieel belang voor het werk. SUMMARY:8\,8 kilometer – A walk from W139 to Four Sisters
DESCRIPTION:Four Sisters is a public garden and a community project initiated by Marija Šujica\, Müge Yilmaz\, and The Beach i.s.m Iris Dik. In a plot of land of 45m x 45m\, rented from Gemeente Amsterdam in Nieuw West\, an edible labyrinth of various plants has been growing since the spring. The project started on the 1st of May of this year\, with the first seeds and saplings being sown\, and will last until mid-October. Four Sisters takes the ancient agricultural method milpa as a learning method to cultivate the idea of support and practice belonging\, rather than owning\, in order to create a community of enriched coexistence. Four Sisters brings people together to learn to grow food in a mutually supportive way; care for our bodies while we care for the land; make a point in biodiversity and seed resources; and generate new local networks between artists\, farmers\, permaculturists\, and residents while learning by doing. \n\n\n\nIn siblinghood with W139\, Müge Yilmaz has initiated a participatory walking performance from the premises of W139 (Warmoestraat\, Centrum) to the premises of Four Sisters (Tom Schreursweg\, Nieuw West). Moving from the center to the edge of the city\, this slow walk will be accompanied by multimedia artist Farah Rahman\, who will guide us through the wild plants and herbs we’ll encounter along the way. The route\, approximately 8.8km long\, will pass through the parks and ‘green spaces’ of Amsterdam. The walk is meant to be a space to learn collectively and share knowledge about the spaces we are walking through and the plants we encounter. Once we reach the Four Sisters\, we’ll learn more about the garden and Muge’s experiences\, and we’ll watch the sunset and eat together near the fire (with the little addition of our foraged herbs).  \n\n\n\nPictures by Jeroen de Smalen.

SUMMARY:Tracing Erased Memories
DESCRIPTION:23\, 24\, 30\, 31\, October & 6\, 7\, 13\, 14 November \n\n\n\nTracing Erased Memories is a site-specific multimedia guided walk\, that aims to connect Amsterdam and Cairo through their harboured memories of resistance against state violence. Throughout the walk\, participants experience the changing image of both Amsterdam and Cairo in relation to recent socio-political turning points. The walk is layered with testimonies from people who were directly involved in the 2011 Egyptian revolution and the students’ and squatters’ protests of 2015 in Amsterdam. This period forms a pivotal moment in the political climate of both cities\, as waves of resistance rose against austerity measures and authoritative regimes. Through a choreographed roadmap\, visitors walk through the city center in Amsterdam with headphones and a tablet. Whilst seeing Amsterdam ahead of them\, the road of Cairo starts unfolding. Sounds of car honks in Cairo juxtapose with bicycles; a building in Amsterdam starts to dissolve into a burned down political party headquarters in Cairo. This experience of mixed up and intertwined realities echoes that of Moucharrafieh and Mohamed when they first moved to Amsterdam trying to make sense of this seemingly untroubled city. Through casual conversations with the guides\, who bring in their own stories and perspectives\, all these different layers connect towards a collective voice of resistance. \n\n\n\nThis interactive performance takes the form of a guided walk for one or two people at a time and will take place during scheduled time slots that visitors can sign up for. \n\n\n\nPictures by Jeroen de Smalen.

DESCRIPTION:Our contemporary moment is saturated with the politics of polarisation and dichotomist thinking—with us- or -against us-\, liberal or conservative\, right or wrong\, all-or-nothing. ​Binary thinking often happens when complex ideas and issues are overly simplified into twofold answers. When instead of embracing multiplicity\, we are bound into thinking about\, and within\, fixed categories that don’t evolve over time or adapt themselves to our constantly changing liquid environments. \n\n\n\nThis tendency of binary thinking has been affecting societies and structures worldwide\, across social\, political\, economic\, and ecological lines. The repercussions of dichotomy have become more critical with the accelerated globalised mobility in recent decades\, all while the social fabric is being rendered more mixed and heterogeneous. But how are our environments really affected by the politics and tendencies of polarization? What are the strategies necessary for humans and ecosystems to coexist in the shared spaces that we inhabit? \n\n\n\nThis exhibition and public program brings into dialogue local and international artists who challenge us to move beyond the trappings of binary thinking\, into intervening\, overlapping\, and intersecting spaces—the inbetween\, the not-yet-here\, the becoming. Working with video\, print\, sculpture\, performance\, and interactive environments\, their works engage questions around polyvocality and the socio-political complexities of their environment through humour\, storytelling\, discourse\, and the creation of alter egos and fictional spaces. \n\n\n\nThe title ‘That Those Beings Be Not Being’ is taken from a chapter in Édouard Glissant’s Poetics of Relation\, in which he argues that “we must clamor for the right to opacity for everyone”. DESCRIPTION:DIWAN for Arts and Dialogue deals with urgencies and pressing questions which the art field\, institutions\, and practitioners are confronted with. For our third event\, we aim to shed light and inform ourselves on the application procedure for acquiring a residence permit for self-employed artists. How do you get a residence permit to work as an artist in the Netherlands? What are the requirements and costs for applying? What are the important points you need to focus on for making a fool-proof application? When do you need to get started with preparing your application? \n\n\n\nIf you are a non-EU art student who just graduated or if you are almost reaching the end of your search-year (zoekjaar) visa\, this session will help you to orientate your next steps towards staying in the Netherlands. DIWAN invites immigration lawyer Nikki Vreede who has experience in assisting non-EU creatives in applying for their artist residence permit. She will share information with us about the procedure towards applying for this specific residence permit: who can apply\, what is the paperwork needed\, what are the costs\, how long does it take to get a response\, and what happens after receiving the response\, in case of rejection or approval. DESCRIPTION:Verbógen Verbrijzeld (Shattered Scattered) examines how white light can be splintered and bended – how you can become one with matter. \n\n\n\nIn the solo exhibition by Philip Vermeulen you will get to know his newly developed ‘hyper-sculptures’\, which shatter and mechanically scatter white light into thousands pieces of color. The roar of colors\, the pinching sound and the wind of the fast spinning machines give you an intense physical experience. Within a meta-composition the works are in constant dialogue with each other\, submerging you in the dynamics between human and machine. \n\n\n\nPhilip Vermeulen is a The Hague-based artist who makes large-scale installations. His installations are  part of his ongoing research in altering psychological states through the manipulation of primary phenomena of light\, sound\, and movement. Vermeulen creates what he calls ‘hypersculptures’: kinetic sculptures which move at such high speeds they change our perception of the physical properties of these materials. \n\n\n\nHis work has been shown at locations from museums (Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam\, Stedelijk Museum Schiedam\, Rijksmuseum Twenthe) to art spaces (W139\, Arti et Amicitae)\, clubs (Berghain Berlin) media festivals (Novas Frequências Rio de Janeiro\, Ars Electronica Linz\, TodaysArt\, CTM Berlin)\, and outdoors (Into the Great Wide Open\, Vlieland). DESCRIPTION:Platform BK kicks off the new cultural season with a three-day workshop on art\, solidarity\, and self-organisation in the Amsterdam art space W139 and surroundings on August 27\, 28 and 29\, 2021. Read all about the event and how you can participate below. \n\n\n\nActive Space Camp is a 48-hour workshop organized by Platform Beeldende Kunst and W139 for local residents\, workers and entrepreneurs of cultural and social organization in De Wallen. The subject of the event is art\, solidarity and radical imagination in an urban environment. In addition to the neighbours of W139\, this program is for the members of Platform BK\, the public and the community of W139 and anyone who is committed to this theme. \n\n\n\nPhotography by Jeroen de Smalen. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIntroduction\n\n\n\nFor 48 hours\, the Platform BK team and the participants will take up residence in the art space of W139\, right in the centre of Amsterdam: a district characterized by over-tourism\, increasing monoculture\, degradation of the quality of life and displacement of art\, culture and other social facilities. In our search for new future scenarios\, P BK\, together with urbanist and theatre-maker Jens Brandt\, organizes a unique\, participatory workshop\, in which a group of 40-50 participants learn to respond in a creative way to the complex situation in their neighbourhood and jointly reinterpret it. We will collect all new plans and insights and present them on the last day in a public event to local residents\, entrepreneurs\, social workers and all other interested parties. With this event\, P BK builds on the program\, No City Without Art\, a national campaign for affordable living and working spaces for artists. Another goal is to emphasise the importance of art and artists who work and live in a city: No City Without Art! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe workshop\n\n\n\nThe three-day workshop is tightly organized in the implementation of the available time as well as space\, with exercises of discovery\, meeting\, creative development\, joint actions that follow one another in quick succession. W139 forms the base camp from which we enter the city in the morning and where we meet again and again to share our findings. \n\n\n\nDuring the workshop\, the participants are always in the search for space in the neighbourhood to be able to live\, work\, coexist\, set up new neighbourhood- and art initiatives as individuals\, but especially as a community\, and take care of others. In this way\, the program forms itself as a creative neighbourhood initiative\, in which we jointly create space for art\, culture\, solidarity and community in the city. \n\n\n\nWe offer the participants and ourselves the tools and imagination with which we can then continue to work in any form of self-organization of living and working together\, in any place in the country. It will thus form the basis for long-term solidarity-based working relationships in this city district and beyond. The outcome of the participatory event will therefore not be concrete knowledge about policy\, which can be adopted by the municipality or housing corporations and imposed from above on the residents. We are not literally creating more space for art and social initiatives in the crowded alleys of the Red Light District. \n\n\n\nFor three days\, the W139 will become a place of gathering and meeting\, where knowledge\, experiences and insights about living\, working\, art and culture in the Red Light District will be exchanged and new scenarios for our shared city will be discovered.

DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with artist and researcher Sher Doruff\, Arefeh Riahi researched the uncertainty of language\, as well as its potential for resisting archival modes of communication. What do ‘limitation’ and ‘consolidation’ mean in relation to language? In what ways are borders manifested within language? In every form of language\, an inclusion and exclusion process are at work. Is there such thing as a lever that exists solely to resist this process of othering\, inside the structure itself? \n\n\n\nThis research manifests itself as a constellation of coalescent components – a sitespecific performance that leaves behind a residual installation\, accompanied by a sound composition and a video production. While each component can be understood as its own independent work\, they also act as annotations and a recollection of the collaborative process. In this regard\, the works too\, exist within a self-referential dialogue with one another. \n\n\n\nThe performance took place on July 29th at a glass border between interior and exterior\, located at the entrance of the W139 project space – a building that is situated in Amsterdam’s Red-Light district. The audience of the work is thereby extended to the transient public\, who can observe it from the street\, through the windows.

DESCRIPTION:Under Bat Hill is a group exhibition that imagines the W139 as a glorious cavern in the middle of the city. Isolated from the outside world and its dwellers\, this huge space is activated through a daily program of screenings and listening sessions. \n\n\n\nAt 19:35 on the 22nd of April\, 2020\, Pope Francis tweeted\, [When we are in a state of sin we are like “human bats” who can move about only at night. We find it easier to live in darkness because the light reveals to us what we do not want to see. But then our eyes grow accustomed to darkness and we no longer recognize the light.] His tweet received hundreds of replies including one from @GiveBatsABreak who began\, [On the contrary Holy Father\, the darkness brings to the bat precisely that which it DOES want to face\, not what it doesn’t. Bats are not under the cover of night committing crimes for which it should be ashamed\, but providing invaluable services to our ecosystems and communities.] Through a series of further tweets\, @GiveBatsABreak pushes beyond the pope’s casual anthropomorphic description\, detailing how bats benefit both the environment and the economy. \n\n\n\nUnder Bat Hill presents a selection of works that too seek to move their subjects beyond casual remit. For our second event we aim to respond and reflect on institutional solidarity\, especially as it has come into focus during the last weeks due to the escalating violence against the Palestinian people. \n\n\n\nDIWAN will be sharing a physical space with the students of Disarming Design and opening up the conversation across radio waves and digital channels with students\, artists and cultural practitioners—independent as well as institutional workers. \n\n\n\nOur aim is to engage in an open conversation about the role of art and educational institutions in regards to struggles for liberation. What are our expectations and underlying assumptions of the institutions that we are a part of? How\, and to what extent\, can the institution carry\, support\, and care for the multiplicity of voices within it? What are the ethical responsibilities of institutions? You are witches. You pay attention to the world and try to make sense of this life together through the phases of the moon from maiden to mother to crone. In your community\, the feminine spirit dominates\, and all gender expressions are celebrated. When your precarious life is threatened by an unsettling prophecy announcing a deadly wind that will prepare the earth for a new cycle\, will you go on a journey to find the source of this wind? What will you discover on the way? Are your rituals of intoxication a means to numb yourself? Or a way to celebrate life against a collective feeling of existential dread? In the ruins of late-stage Capitalism\, consumption and hedonism function as a means to escape the body — your body. You are invited to consider the beauty and horror of these daily practices. \n\n\n\nExperience an atmosphere of all things fleshy\, shiny and morally ambiguous. An abundance of colours\, animatronics and visual stimuli that explore themes of digestion\, bodily cravings\, erotic grotesque nonsense\, sex as a matrice of power and the commodification of pleasure. Dive into the essence of all that exists with her mystical figures\, off into a world that is more real than you can ever imagine. \n\n\n\nShertise Solano is a Dutch Caribbean multimedia artist with a background in theatre who lives and works in the Netherlands. DESCRIPTION:A vestzak-broekzak operation is an unnecessarily complex economic system where money is being pumped around\, with most of it ending up back where it came from. How is the cultural sector part of these money flows—from the vest pocket to the pant’s pocket? \n\n\n\nIn Solidarity Sessions #1\, we focused on the overall impact of the corona crisis on cultural workers\, independent exhibition spaces\, institutions\, and the webs of networks around them. For our second session we’ll focus in on the housing and studio rental issues that are coming up for cultural workers\, and what that reveals about the larger systemic power structures on which the cultural economy operates. It’s only by seeing the bigger picture that we can understand what we need to do to change. \n\n\n\nJoin us live via W139’s YouTube channel on Thursday June 11th\, at 8 p.m\, for an informational\, interactive livestream about the current broedplaatsen and housing situation in the Netherlands and its precarity\, fragility\, and inequality (which the current crisis has made more visible). \n\n\n\nWe will be joined by cultural workers\, lawyers\, and representatives of advocacy organizations. During this session\, we’ll be sharing: \n\n\n\n\nTestimonies by artists and cultural workers who are facing urgent problems with studio/housing spaces.\n\n\n\nHow the crisis is being used as a way to increase rents or evict people from their homes or studios.\n\n\n\nWhat rights tenants (either for studios and studio/living spaces) have\, or rather do not have\, during the covid-19 crisis.\n\n\n\nHow artist-run buildings are organised—in contrast to the broedplaatsen\, which are management-led—and how they are supporting cultural workers during this time.\n\n\n\nThe larger picture of how money flows within the cultural sector and how much cultural funding actually goes to paying rent\, rather than paying artists and cultural workers.\n\n\n\nWhat direct actions we can take towards collective emancipation.\n\n\n\n\nThis session is organised by a collaborative effort from Platform Beeldende Kunst and W139\, and has been initiated by Margarita Osipian. W139 is virtually hosting the event within the exhibition ‘market’. We hope that in this space we can openly share questions\, concerns\, and fears\, and stand in stronger solidarity with one another.
